DIY Trailer Cooler

Stardate 2024: I’m finally attempting to rid ourselves of the daily ice runs and laborious chore of sorting coolers, draining water, trying to protect and maintain our perishable food! I cannot tell you how many times I lose my mind and temper dealing with 10 coolers for 14 days. No matter how hard I try, every year something happens where some portions of our precious food is unusable. Our 2024 burn should be much smoother sailing with my recently purchased 12′ cargo trailer. My plans are to partition a roughly 4’x6’x6′ space refrigerator.

This post is to document the journey converting this trailer and what to expect out on the Playa. Jordan is already planning to assist and anyone else wanting to join in the fun, please reach out to me. If you want to go down a rabbit hole and see some example DIY builds, check out these links:

PHASE I – Secure Trailer

As you can see by the “before” pictures, this well used trailer needs some cosmetic fixes, but overall, it is water tight with no leaks and mechanically in good working order. First order of business will be to remove the wood paneling and insulation then replace/repair any external lights….

PHASE II

Once we get the interior framing exposed, we’ll start planning out some metal skin repairs, tightening up doors with new weather proofing, and replace the top vent (it’s broken). We’ll need to sketch out our floor plan and determine what materials we’ll need to procure. Also, several of our crew members are going to take a welding class (Myself, Jordan, Nick & Raphael), arming ourselves with new skills. Keep an eye on this post as we document our progress along the way.
